Set the Next Goal Before the Current Goal Ends
Set the Next Goal Before the Current Goal Ends
Taken from Grand Master William Clark’s September 28, 2026 Staff Meeting
One of the most dangerous moments in a student’s martial arts journey can be the moment they accomplish a goal.
That sounds backward—but think about it.
They finish the introductory program.
They earn the belt they were working toward.
They complete their membership.
They compete in the tournament.
Then comes the question:
“Now what?”
If there is no answer, stopping can suddenly feel natural.
The Next Goal Gives the Current Goal Meaning
Students need to see that martial arts is a journey rather than a finish line.
Before one goal ends, begin talking about the next possibility.
That might be:
- Black Belt
- Advanced Training
- Leadership
- Coaching
- Competition
- Higher-degree training
- Instructor development
The specific goal will be different for every student.
What matters is that there is a next goal.
Progress Checks are one of the best opportunities to have these conversations.
Ask students what they have enjoyed. Talk about what you have noticed. Show them what they could accomplish next. Then make a personal recommendation.
Do not wait until the membership is about to expire to begin discussing the future.
By then, the student may already be mentally finished.
Build the next dream before the current dream is complete.
Because when students can clearly see what comes next, they have another reason to keep moving forward.
