If You Don’t Have Enough Nos, You May Not Be Asking Enough
If You Don’t Have Enough Nos, You May Not Be Asking Enough
Inspired by Grand Master William Clark’s October 26, 2026 Staff Meeting
Most martial arts school owners love hearing “yes.”
Yes to enrolling.
Yes to upgrading.
Yes to renewing.
Yes to Coaching.
Yes to a paid-in-full option.
But there is another number worth paying attention to:
How many people said no?
That may sound strange, but a very low number of nos can reveal a bigger problem.
You may not be asking enough people.
Measure the Opportunities You Create
If only three people were presented with an opportunity this month and all three said yes, the conversion rate looks fantastic.
But did you really maximize the opportunity inside your school?
Grand Master Clark challenged schools to track both sides:
Yeses and nos.
A no is not always failure.
Sometimes it simply means you made the presentation, gave the person an opportunity, and allowed them to decide.
What matters is that the conversation happened.
Eliminate Zero-Ask Days
Every day your school is open should create meaningful conversations.
Ask someone to:
- Schedule an introductory lesson.
- Bring a friend.
- Attend an event.
- Try Advanced Training.
- Join Leadership or Coaching.
- Increase their training frequency.
- Consider their next long-term goal.
You will hear some yeses.
You will hear some nos.
That is part of the process.
The real problem is when nobody is being asked at all.
Do not measure success only by how many people said yes. Measure whether you created enough opportunities for people to decide.
Ask more.
Track the answers.
Keep moving.
