Every Class Should Give Students Something to Look Forward To
Every Class Should Give Students Something to Look Forward To
Inspired by Grand Master William Clark’s September 23, 2026 Staff Meeting
Imagine walking into your martial arts school and immediately noticing something different.
The targets are arranged differently.
The training bags have moved.
There is a new obstacle course.
A special challenge is waiting.
Before class even begins, the student is thinking:
“What’s going to happen today?”
That is exactly the kind of excitement every martial arts instructor should be creating.
The Curriculum Can Stay the Same. The Experience Should Not.
Students need repetition to develop martial arts skills.
But repetition does not have to feel repetitive.
A round kick can be practiced through:
- Partner drills
- Accuracy challenges
- Target combinations
- Movement exercises
- Obstacle courses
- Team competitions
The technique remains the same.
The experience feels different.
This approach is often called edutainment — combining education and entertainment to create a learning experience students genuinely enjoy.
Every Class Is Another Retention Opportunity
Students do not decide whether they love martial arts only when their membership expires.
Their enthusiasm is influenced by the experience they have every time they walk onto the training floor.
A class that feels challenging, exciting, and rewarding gives them another reason to return.
That does not mean every class needs elaborate equipment or a completely new curriculum.
Sometimes one small change is enough.
Move the bags.
Change the drill.
Add a challenge.
Create a moment that makes students feel powerful.
Give students something new to anticipate while helping them master what they already know.
Because great instruction develops skills.
Great experiences help build lifetime martial artists.
